Parkour Jams - More than a Meet-up

It’s no secret that Jams are the social backbone of the parkour community. But what are they and why are they so fundamental?

Parkour is, at its core, an urban activity. Underneath the cold concrete surfaces is the warm heart of the people who live on them. More than just infrastructure to navigate and overcome, the people who train in each city know the spots and the history behind them, which is built upon and shared; folklore for the modern era.

The digital age is what sets parkour apart from other sports. As clips in the early days were shared and rapidly became a viral sensation, connection between athletes and practitioners online became easier. This established the foundation for calling on the people you watched virtually to come together and train in reality.

Jams are more than a meet-up of athleticism and movement; they often combine competition with street culture. This is a key element for parkour enthusiasts: the nightlife, fashion and branding. There are opportunities for local DJs and musicians and indie streetwear and food vendors to make an appearance and be uplifted by the community. A bigger event can provide the perfect platform for collaboration and partnerships that last beyond the event.

Jams can come in different sizes - from a small group of friends putting together a youtube video one afternoon to large-scale sponsored events that last for days. That means there’s nothing stopping you from organising one yourself. The more you provide to the community the more you get in return - so keep up the connection to widen your reach and find more of your people. More people means more jams and more opportunities to not just be noticed, but seen, valued and befriended by others that love what you do.
